Supported Rider Gordon Murphy has a feed visit from Saracen!
Last week, Attlee’s Supported Rider Gordon Murphy received a visit from Saracen Horse Feeds Nutritionist, Abi Turner. All six of the supported riders for the Lillico and Attlee stores have all had a complimentary feed visit from Abi as part of their supported rider competition win.
Gordon is a professional event rider based near Attlee’s Country Store. He has quite a range of horses on his yard from retired to international level eventers, meaning that care and attention must be taken to all of their feeding regimes to ensure all horses are feeling their best for their age and level of work.
Abi looked at 14 of the horses there and was generally pleased with their condition. It can be hard to evaluate your horse’s condition and sometimes it is better to have an expert, like a Saracen Horse Feeds Nutritionist, take a look for a bit of further help and advice. The majority of Gordon’s horses and liveries are good doers and receive quite basic rations of chaff and pony nuts. Abi recommended feeding a ration of Saracen Super Fibre Cubes as it is fully-fortified, meaning that it contains essential vitamins and minerals as well as “Super-Fibres” along with Dengie chaff to compliment this. For some of the older horses, she suggested coming back to check on them once we are a bit further into winter as Gordon said there were a few who could do with some extra nutritional support over the winter.
The horses in harder work and competing at a higher level required something a bit different, particularly those who could be prone to gastric ulcers. Abi recommended Saracen Re-Leve®, which again is fully-fortified and safe to feed to horses with ulcers as it contains no oats and no barley. Most of Gordon’s competition horses have good energy levels and do not need any further energy from feed but could benefit from feeds to help support topline.
The nutrition visit was insightful, especially with so many different shapes and sizes of horses on one yard! Now is the time to start thinking about your winter feeding regime and some of the factors which could affect this like a decrease in grass levels and restricted riding times.
